Position Summary: The Office of School Health (OSH) nursing program includes school nurses, nursing supervisors, and Public Health Advisors/Assistants, who work under the guidance of borough specific assistant nursing directors to manage staffing and the delivery of direct care and case coordination.

The OSH central office oversees administrative functions to support and facilitate services provided in schools by OSH Nursing staff. This includes staff who: review, recommend and coordinate services for students with need for medical accommodations; respond to and support communication during communicable disease outbreaks; provide technical support for contract agency nurse staff; and support general nursing functions. Central office staff nurses perform tasks that aim to ensure that OSH regions, schools, and/or families obtain and access resources for students to attend school. Performs related work.

Key Relationships: Nursing leadership within NYC Public Schools (NYCPS) and NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH), School and program nurses, OSH leadership and staff

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Review referrals and documents from NYCPS teams to recommend nursing service categories for students with specific abilities, including those who may require specific accommodations to attend school in the least restrictive environment (LRE). This may include transportation and/or an individual nurse.
  • Collaborate with nurse colleagues for case coordination as necessary.
  • Review OSH medication and procedure forms for students.
  • Perform individual case management and coordination.
  • Access NYCPS student information systems to review, make recommendations and request systems reports.
  • Liaise with agencies contracted by the OSH to provide services for students.
  • Communicate with other disciplines such as: Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Section 504 teams; medical providers; legal counsel; school-based staff; families; and contract agencies.
  • Enter data into the OSH electronic system, using the OSH electronic health record as needed.
  • Provide data and/or reports to central directors, supervisors and/or colleagues to support program functions.
  • When needed, may respond to subpoenas and testify in pendency cases or in court.
  • Support response to communicable disease outbreaks in the school system.
  • Assist the Central Office with special projects and/or initiatives.
  • Participate in policy review as needed.
  • Provide reports to Central Office leadership or colleagues as requested.
  • Participate in team meetings.
  • When needed, conduct trainings or lead presentations about processes or elements of their work.

Qualification Requirements:

Minimum

A valid New York State Registered Professional Nurse License.

Preferred

  • Bachelor in Nursing or Associate in Nursing.
  • CPR Certified.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook, including effective use of email.

Salary: $73,686
